Pigmentation

What is it and how is it caused?

Skin pigmentation refers to the colour of your skin, which is determined by the amount of melanin produced by skin cells. Variations in pigmentation can result in conditions such as hyperpigmentation, where certain areas of the skin become darker, or hypopigmentation, where skin appears lighter.

Causes of Skin Pigmentation:

  • Sun Exposure: Prolonged UV exposure stimulates melanin production, often leading to dark spots or uneven skin tone.

  • Hormonal Changes: Conditions like melasma, commonly triggered by hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy or contraceptive use, can cause dark patches on the face.

  • Ageing: As skin ages, it may develop age spots or liver spots due to cumulative sun exposure over time.

  • Skin Injuries: Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can occur after acne, cuts, or other skin injuries, resulting in darker areas as the skin heals.

  • Genetics: Genetic predisposition can influence how your skin reacts to sun exposure and the likelihood of developing pigmentation issues.
